Stories from the Sky: Why Galapagos Sky is a Diver’s Dream

Why Galapagos Sky is a Diver's Dream

From dive guide to sales expert: Miguel Triviño on why Galapagos Sky is a diver’s dream

Career and Perspective

How many years did you work as a dive guide on Galapagos Sky?

I started in 2001 and finished in 2012. During that time, I came and went several times, adding up to roughly 7 years on board.

What did you enjoy the most about that period on board?

Meeting people from all over the world with whom we shared a common language—diving—and of course, diving in one of the best places on the planet: Galapagos.

Now that you’re part of the sales team, how do you apply your guiding experience when advising travelers?

I give them firsthand information, practical tips, and real guidance regarding equipment, techniques, sites, and more.

Galapagos Sky is a divers dream

About Galapagos Sky

From your experience, what makes Galapagos Sky stand out from other liveaboards in the archipelago?

It’s a vessel that was built and designed for diving. Its platform, camera table, dive stations, filling cascades—everything on the technical side is exactly what a diver needs. And the hospitality side is exceptional. We always adapt to guests’ needs, including dietary requirements. It’s a 5-star hotel made for diving.

How would you describe the onboard atmosphere for divers?

One of camaraderie. I still remember those sunsets when passengers would gather to talk about the day’s dives—what they saw, what they did, or how challenging the immersion was. They were intense and enjoyable conversations where everyone shared, in some way, the passion they felt for diving.

What do you think about the preparation and knowledge of the crew and guides?

It’s one of the foundations of Galapagos Sky’s success. The crew—each of them—is a true expert in their area. Ecoventura has always been known for long-term relationships with its staff, and that naturally results in experienced people who know their jobs perfectly.

Personal Experiences

What is your favorite dive site in the islands, and why?

Wolf, because of the variety of diving you can do there—caves, currents, pinnacles, large schools of sharks, and more.

Could you share an unforgettable moment you experienced underwater?

There are several, but I always remember a dive at Wolf where, from the very first minute, there was a massive curtain of sharks from left to right and top to bottom. I never had to move—it was 60 minutes of sharks and more sharks. At one point, I wondered, “How do I get out of here?” because eventually I would have to ascend, and there were hundreds of sharks above me.

Which marine species or behavior has impressed you the most?

As a biologist, I was impressed by the spatial distribution and behavior of each species. It felt like diving into the textbooks I once saw in university and confirming all that theoretical information. I also noticed changes in abundance and distribution depending on temperature.

Educational Value & Year-Round Diving

Why do you think Galapagos is a dive destination that can be enjoyed year-round?

Galapagos is full of life all year. The only animal we may not see in the warm season is the whale shark, but all other creatures are present. Depending on temperature, abundance may fluctuate slightly, but that’s all.

What changes between the cold and warm seasons?

In the cold season, the sea is rougher, days are cloudy, and there are more currents and swell due to the wind. The diving is more challenging, but there is greater abundance of individuals and the presence of whale sharks.

In the warm season, we don’t have whale sharks, but the dives are more pleasant and less demanding, while still offering all the other species to enjoy.

What would you recommend to a diver planning their first trip to Galapagos?

To self-evaluate and consider their technical diving level. Before traveling, they should do some dives in currents and cold water. And, of course, choose a dive operation that inspires confidence and safety, with a reputation and experience aligned with their expectations.

Personal Closing

If you had to describe Galapagos Sky in one sentence, what would it be?

GS is the ideal vessel, in the ideal place, with the ideal crew—for the ideal cruise.

What advice would you give someone who dreams of diving here for the first time?

To go for it. If you dream of coming to Galapagos and don’t come, I assure you that one day you’ll regret it. People regret not having the courage to follow their dreams more than anything else.
